Sallynoggin Killiney (SKY) ETNS

Sallynoggin Killiney (SKY) ETNS is a new Educate Together school which opened in September 2022 to serve the Sallynoggin/ Killiney area. We welcome all students of all backgrounds and celebrate the wonderful diversity of our school community. We value how a sense of belonging to the school community contributes towards well-being and success at school.

Our First Day of School – Sept 2022

We finally opened our doors to our amazing new pupils on September 1st 2022. A great day was had by all and there wasn’t a single tear all day – well, not from the pupils anyway!

We feel very lucky to have such a great team of staff working with the children in our Autism Class and our Junior and Senior Mainstream Classes!

Meet the Principal

“I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to work in partnership with the new Sallynoggin Killiney community. Together, we will create a safe and happy school for our children built on the foundation of respectful and positive relationships. Together, we will cherish the uniqueness of each individual and nurture a sense of belonging and connection, so that every child will feel empowered to flourish and achieve its potential. Together, we will help our children find their voices and empower them to use their voices for the common good, as they become responsible stewards of the world around them. I am excited to begin this journey with the children, families, staff and all stakeholders of our Sallynoggin Killiney ETNS community.” Paul, Principal SKyETNS.

Permanent Location

Our permanent site is on Rochestown Avenue next to the old part of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in the area known as Woodpark. It is directly opposite the apartments at Kensington Lodge but cannot be seen from the road due to a wall obscuring the view. However, the site can be seen from the car park of the old part of the hospital. The Department is currently in the planning phase. Click on the image to see the location on Google Maps.

Our Temporary School Site

We are accommodated temporarily in fantastic standard modular classrooms on the site of Holy Child Community School in Sallynoggin. We are blown away by how spacious and bright our accommodation is. This is an excellent temporary location that offers great access to outdoor space, is a quiet location away from the noise and pollution of a busy road, is easily accessible and provides excellent safety and security for our children. We have already made ourselves feel very at home here.

Our temporary school building is accessible from the front entrance of Holy Child Community School via a footpath around the right side of the school. There is no parking for families or visitors on the school site which is standard for most schools. There is parking on the street outside the school, in front of the neighbouring church and outside the shops opposite the school.

We are particularly excited at the prospect of forging meaningful links and nurturing positive relationships with the students and staff of Holy Child and consider this to be an invaluable opportunity as we begin our journey as a new school. Holy Child school shares many aspects of the Educate Together ethos, living out the true spirit of inclusion and equality. The students have been praised by school inspectors for their ‘considered and compassionate nature’.

Our Permanent School Site

The Department of Education has acquired a permanent site for our school on Rochestown Avenue near the National Rehabilitation Hospital in the area known as Woodpark. It is directly opposite the apartments at Kensington Lodge but cannot be seen from the road due to a wall obscuring the view. However, the site can be seen from the car park of the old part of the hospital. The Department is currently in the planning phase.

We are now in the very fortunate position of knowing both the permanent and temporary locations of our school and are very grateful to be in this position at such an early stage. These sites being so close to each other is a further bonus that many new schools could only dream of.

The Educate Together Ethos

The ethos of Educate Together schools is based on our four pillars. We are:

Watch Paul explaining
the Educate Together ethos
  • Equality-based
    – equal opportunities and equal respect for all identities and all backgrounds
  • Co-educational
    – all children explore their full range of abilities and have equal access regardless of their identity
  • Democratically-run
    – embracing the voice of our community to enable our children to flourish in the best way possible
  • Child-centred
    – putting the needs of all children at the heart of our policies and practices

Guided by these principles, we aim to instil a sense of equality and justice in our students. We aim to raise student voice and encourage their active stewardship in the world around them. In an environment of mutual respect and care, we aim to encourage everyone to be proud of who they are, to recognise their strengths and to reach their full potential.

All Educate Together schools are state-funded and non-fee-paying. We engage with all members of our community as equals by using our first names. We have no school uniform to facilitate the individuality of all children.

Ethical Education

Like other schools, Educate Together schools follow the National Curriculum. In addition, we teach our own Ethical Education curriculum (Learn Together) which seeks to offer students the opportunity to meaningfully and critically reflect upon the world around them, focusing on questions of equality, justice, sustainability and active citizenship. While taught as an independent subject, the values of the Learn Together permeate all other areas of the curriculum and school life.

Community Participation

Schools function best when we welcome and embrace the skills, knowledge, expertise and passion that are available within the school community. What could your contribution be? If you have a skill or a particular interest that you think might help our school, please do let us know.

In November, we will be forming our first Board of Management and we are currently looking for anyone who might be interested in filling one of the spaces. If you think you might be interested, please get in touch at info@sallynogginkillineyetns.ie or call us on 0851206196.
